I was honored to visit and tour the USS Nimitz and the USS Alexandria. I experienced an arrested landing and catapult launch off of the deck of the Nimitz. I will remember this experience forever. The trip was in support of the Navy's NUPOC (Naval Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate) program. You can check out the opportunities that this program offers at the link below.

We were awarded a NASA ULI grant! These are very selective multi-year awards of which only four were awarded this year. We will partner with Boston Univ., Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Univ., Tuskeegee Univ., and Joby Aviation to study the aerodynamics and noise of multi-rotor vertical lift vehicles in gusty environments. NASA's press release can be found at the following link: www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-names-university-teams-to-take-on-aeronautics-research-challenges
I'm glad to be working with Dr. John Palmore on a study to investigate the performance and modeling of an acoustic deterrent system that will help keep invasive species of fish from passing through locks along the Mississippi River. The following links to an article describing this new research project. vtx.vt.edu/articles/2022/12/eng-palmore-carp.html
Our new DURIP award is going to allow us to efficiently acquire the time-resolved volumetric flow-field for studies of rotor noise and turbulent boundary layers! Check out the article describing the new system. vtx.vt.edu/articles/2022/11/instrumentation-upgrades-durip.html
Our group won the AIAA 2021 SciTech Forum Best Paper Award awarded by the Sensor Systems and Information Fusion Technical Committee. The winning paper was “A Bayesian Mixture Model Approach to Anomaly Detection with Application to Wind Tunnel Experiments” and the lead author was Sierra Merkes. arc.aiaa.org/doi/abs/10.2514/6.2021-1268
Aaron successfully defended his dissertation "Anomaly Detection in Aeroacoustic Wind Tunnel Experiments" on Sept. 8th! Look out for his work in several publications in the coming months.
